South Pueblo
Local Real Estate Guide
What used to be a city in Colorado, South Pueblo was one of three towns that were later incorporated into Pueblo, Colorado, with Central Pueblo and Bessemer. The neighborhood of South Pueblo began as makeshift homes in 1880 when the steel mill was under construction, which later would become the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I). The settlement was initially called Taylorville, named after the superintendent of the building, Col. W. W. Taylor.
South Pueblo is a place highly endowed by nature, and it is an area born of vision, ambition, and goodwill. It is considered the crossroad between the romantic mythology of the American West and limitless industrial capitalism. Natives of the land would climb its barren headland and hillsides to watch the Arkansas River escape the distant, granite spires of the Rocky Mountains and emerge eastward onto the vastness of the Great Plains. In 1872 steel rails connected Pueblo to Denver and produced not only steel rails but also nails, barbed wire, and countless other goods that facilitated the transformation of the West. The railroad and the steel industry in South Pueblo were all the products of one man’s vision, General William Jackson Palmer.
