South County
Local Real Estate Guide
South County is the area of Pueblo county which is south of the town of Pueblo. Pueblo County was established in 1861 as one of the original seventeen counties of the Colorado Territory and covered 2,398 square miles in southeast Colorado.
Old Colorado City, formerly Colorado City, was once a town that was the supply hub and a gold ore processing center beginning in the 1890s. For a brief period, it was the capital of the Colorado Territory, where residents of Colorado City worked at some of the 50 coal mines in the Colorado Springs area. The area was also known as El Dorado for the gold mines found during the gold rush. The name Colorado City came from the red sandstone rocks and red outcroppings in the vicinity, which can be explicitly seen in the Rampart Range and Garden of the Gods formations because the word Colorado in Spanish means “blushing” or “red.”
Today, Colorado city is now a tourist area with boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Located south of Pueblo on I-25 in Colorado City, a census-designated place (CDP) governed by Pueblo County, Colorado, and is a part of the Pueblo, CO, Metropolitan Statistical Area. As a metropolitan district, Colorado City is located in the Greenhorn Valley. The Greenhorn Mountain is also a popular stop, towering over 12,000 feet in height and 7,000 feet above town, while Colorado city sits at 5,925 feet of elevation in Pueblo County.

Living in South County
Most tourists visit the town for the area’s outdoor activities and recreational camping, fishing, and hiking sites. The Greenhorn Meadows Park is a popular trail in the area, totaling a moderate 6.1 miles, and has a loop of campsites and a small hike to a hidden cave. It is also a great hiking destination that would bring you to the top of Greenhorn Mountain for great views of the surrounding forest and town.
Traveling 20 minutes west on CO-165 leads to Lake Isabel and many hiking trails within the San Isabel National Forest. It offers views of the stunning Sangre de Cristo mountains. Pueblo South/Colorado City KOA is located off I-25 and provides RV spots, camping cabins, and tent sites. A 30-minute drive up I-25 will lead you to Lake Pueblo, a 4,600-acre lake that is a popular place for fishing. Residents and visitors can go for motorized boating or shore fishing from over 60 miles of shoreline.
Other main attractions include the Frontier Pathways, where Colorado City sits at the southeastern endpoint of this 103-mile byway. This retraces the early routes of the area’s explorers, and as you come north, the road T-bones at CO-96, where you can continue either east or west on the byway to Pueblo or Westcliffe. There are options for visitors where they can choose to begin their loop in Colorado City and head west towards Rye or begin the loop in Pueblo by heading north on Interstate-25.
Summer activities can include an underground mine tour to discover unique castles in the sky, such as Bishop Castle in nearby Rye. Bishop Castle is a jaw-dropping stone building beginning sixty years ago and continually improved by Jim Bishop. His life-long project has transformed this once empty plot of land into a towering stone, iron, and glass statue that brings visitors from all over Colorado. Visitors are welcome to climb its soaring towers and bridges, explore the interior rooms, including the Grand Ballroom, admire the castle’s unique architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows, and see the Fire-Breathing Dragon. If you are lucky, the best odds of seeing Jim Bishop in action are on the weekends. Bishop Castle is open every day, free of charge.
Rye is a Statutory Town in Pueblo County, Colorado, and it is part of the Pueblo, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rye lies southwest of Pueblo in Colorado 165 between Colorado City and Fairview. On the foothills of San Isabel, Rye is found along a scenic state byway in south-central Colorado.
Rye’s original name was Table Top Mountain, which might better describe its landscape. It is one of several historic communities established around 1870. It also marks a vital route once traveled by American Indians, Spanish and American explorers, traders, fur trappers, homesteaders, ranchers, and gold prospectors. Historically, the Rye area was known for its dairies and sawmills; the name comes from the abundance of wild rye on the site or the rye whiskey manufactured there.
In the 1960s, a small stream near Rye was found to contain the last surviving population of Arkansas River Colorado greenback cutthroat trout, which is now Colorado’s official state fish.
Beulah is an unincorporated community and a part of the Beulah Valley CDP situated on the southern front range in Pueblo County, Colorado. Located along State Highway 78, about 21 miles southwest of Pueblo, Beulah lies at around 6,800 feet in elevation within the beautiful Wet Mountains.
Beulah is one of the first settlements in the Wet Mountains, having a rich history of petroglyphs and artifacts left behind in the area’s many caves that belonged to the Native American tribes many years ago. In 1840 settlers rediscovered the valley town and called it Fisher’s Hole. However, the name Beulah which refers to the biblical term for “married,” was eventually made permanent by the community members.
There is also evidence of the Confederate Army troops’ headquarters, which were stationed in Beulah that can be found east of town, along State Highway 78. It is said that the Confederate Army troops favored this area because they thought it was rich in gold.
Davenport Creek Campground and North Creek Campground are charming, recently renovated space great for small campers and tents. Just south of downtown Beulah is the Pueblo Mountain Park, great for group retreats and weekend getaways, as it offers 611 acres of outdoor space, a lodge, an amphitheater, hiking trails, and a ropes course.
South County in Colorado is visited yearly by people from all over for not only the views of the mountains but for the many recreational activities found here, such as golfing, hiking, fishing for trout and Kokanee salmon, hiking, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, and bird watching.
