Arkansas River Valley
Local Real Estate Guide
Arkansas Valley in Colorado was established between the 1700s and early 1800s when hunters, trappers, and traders of European descent came to the region. Colorado saw the establishment of several trading posts and small settlements in the Arkansas and South Platte valleys, including Bent’s Fort and El Pueblo, as the United States expanded westward.
Nearly 1,500 miles long, the Arkansas River is the sixth-longest river in the United States and the principal secondary river of the Mississippi River. The source of the Arkansas River is located near Leadville, in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, and once served as a boundary between the United States and Mexico in the 1800s. It flows to the east and southeast, where it travels down to the city of Pueblo, Colorado, and continues to travel to Wichita, Kansas, Oklahoma, before crossing into Fort Smith and Little Rock, Arkansas, eventually reaching Napoleon. It is the lifeblood of cities and agricultural communities along its course from Pueblo.
