The East Side Neighborhood is one of the most diverse areas in Colorado concerning income level, social status, and architectural expression. Established in 1872, the area has been historically known as East Pueblo and Park Hill for a time and was one of the very earliest areas in Colorado to be settled by Europeans. It is one of the largest concentrations of early homes in the City of Pueblo.

East Pueblo is bordered by Interstate 25; to the west lies the Fountain River and rail lines, south is the Arkansas River, Colorado State Highway 47 to the east, and north of East Pueblo is the U.S. Highway Bypass with one portion just west of Colorado 47 rests Eastwood Heights.

The East Side is a place set apart physically by Fountain Creek, which separates the neighborhood from the rest of the city. East Pueblo is home to a mix of classes and ethnicities that live side by side yet are set apart by its economic and cultural diversity.

Living In East Pueblo

The residential and commercial district of East Pueblo was developed between 1880 and 1940. Its historic architectural styles featured the Princess Ann style cottages with canted entrances. Today, city officials have recognized the importance of the Eastside neighborhood, with particular attention to the “Little Red House” and the nearby community garden, and a series of terrace block apartment buildings that the Housing Authority has refurbished for permanently disabled veterans.

In 2014, three new libraries were opened to the public and became part of the Pueblo City County Library District. Located in the Greenhorn Valley, on St. Charles Mesa, and Pueblo’s East Side, each library depicts the rich history of each library’s region.

In the East Side Pueblo, the setting and real estate look and feels when you walk or drive around, you can experience the diverse flavors within the neighborhood. The East Side neighborhood boasts of high rates of college students due to being a student-friendly place to live and having amenities and services geared towards college students, from undergraduates to graduate students. Commuters in the East Side neighborhood spend under 15 minutes commuting one way to work or to school. Even though most residents drive private vehicles, a number carpool with coworkers, friends, or neighbors to get to work and school. East Pueblo has a walk score of 42 and a bike score of 46.

The natural location of East Pueblo, its proximity to the railroad, and the abundant supply of water that can be obtained at comparatively little expense anywhere give it a great attraction in the eyes of both real estate dealers and home buyers.

Once established as a neighborhood, the East Side’s social, economic, and ethnic values fluctuated according to the cycle of the seasons. The working-class neighborhood’s humble beginnings were sown by the hard-working hands of East Side residents, who now have cultivated a community that blossomed into a resilient society.
